The Eyes Are The Window Of The Soul

So another transfer window has shut... I've sat here for the last couple of hours watching Sky Sports News report as clubs have frantically scrambled to make their last minute signings before the 11pm deadline.

I don't know why it's such compelling viewing, it's ridiculous really but it's so addictive... I know really I'm watching because I'm secretly hoping that United will sign some big name player - although I know they hardly ever do any last minute business.

To be honest I much prefer the United way of operating, they identify their targets early and they get the deals sorted at the start of the summer. This then means that the players have longer to settle in and the club can concentrate on getting the team prepared for the start of the season.

A lot of the deals that have gone through today just seem rushed to me, I just think to myself are these really the players the clubs want, do the players themselves really want to play for these clubs or is just that everyone is that desperate to do a deal that they settle for second best. For example I'm not sure that Arsenal would have bought who they've bought if it wasn't for the fact that they were running out of time. Now i know that its not all there fault, the situation with Nasri and Fabregas has dragged on all summer because they obviously wanted to get the best price for these players but it meant they had no time to bring in players of equal quality.

Apparently £450 million has been spent during this window - it's incredible, the transfer market certainly doesn't reflect the economy. I suppose for a lot of clubs it's just one big gamble, a roll of the dice. I don't know why they bother... there's only one winner this season!

8 2 Admit That I Sold My Ticket!

Can you believe that United tonk Arsenal 8 - 2 and I wasn't there to see it! I don't miss too many games and I should have been there but I had a bit of trouble selling my Dads ticket as he was working - so I decided to sell both tickets to a friend of mine who took his son. To be honest I don't regret it, I'm sure they both had a great time and I certainly enjoyed watching it on TV. I had Scarlett with me, I think that baby is starting to become my lucky charm!
I was very impressed with United, I thought they were brilliant going forward but I thought Arsenal were awful defensively. I actually think United can play much better than that, we basically gifted Arsenal their two goals through stupid mistakes and they should really have punished Johnny Evans clumsy defending and scored that penalty. Mark my words this United team will only get better.
I'm loving the new signings, Jones is a class act, Young always looks dangerous and i even like the goalkeeper although he definitely needs to improve his concentration. I've also been very impressed with the two young lads that Fergie has promoted... Wellbeck and Cleverly. It's a shame Wellbeck has picked up an injury but at least we have plenty of other options up front. Cleverly looks like just sort of midfielder that we need, plenty of running and quality on the ball.
I still can't believe how bad Arsenal were, I just don't know what's going on there. Why didn't they flog Fabregas and Nasri early in the summer it was obvious that they both wanted to go. There operating a really strange transfer policy there... now they are going to end up with sub standard signings because they have left there recruitment far too late.
I don't see them as a challenger for the league I hate to say it but I think City could be our biggest rivals... They've started the season almost as well as us! I'm not convinced by Chelsea yet and I think Liverpool may lack a bit of quality - they don't have enough top players in my opinion, although I suppose there is one day until the window closes so they may bring more players in! But ultimately I think it will be a two horse race.

End Of The Summer

So it's early morning Tuesday, the day after a particularly bleak and wet August Bank Holiday Monday. I've just given Scarlett half her bottle and she seems to be torn between finishing it or returning to sleep.

It feels a bit like the end of summer, its another miserable looking day and people will soon be leaving for work knowing that that's it... no more holidays. I'm guessing the schools will be reopening any day and all the children will be going back - I remember how miserable I used to feel when the summer holidays were finished.

Personally I'll actually be glad to see the back of the summer, for me it's been one long hard struggle. Business has been pretty poor, summer always seems like a bad time for a designer. The work dries up, the phone stops ringing, projects seems to take twice as long to finish. I think its because people, businesses tend to wind down a bit in the summer, people go on holiday or spend more time at home with their children. Its perfectly understandable and i hope that next summer I can be in a position where i can afford to take some time off and not worry so much about work!

This summer has also been pretty bleak for a couple of other reasons, we just seemed to have a spell which lasted for a few weeks where nothing seemed to go right! Eric my dog had to have an operation on his knee, Suzie had to have an operation on her toe, the doctor thought I was diabetic (thankfully I'm not!) and Scarlett has really suffered with her teeth. There was a week or two where all four of us had medical appointments - it felt like we were living in a waiting room. On top of all that my main computer crashed, the hard drive had fried, so I had to have that replaced which took nearly a week - good job work was quiet!

So now things seem to be getting back to normal, the last week or so has actually been quite busy work wise and September is looking like it will be a busy month. I suppose not everything about this summer has been bad, I think I'm pretty lucky really and it's been brilliant watching Scarlett grow and develop over the last few months. I'm looking forward to next summer when hopefully we can go away for a few months and not worry about work. So I guess I better knuckle down, get some work done and make some money!

Work Work Work

Right then... a very quick little work update for those of you that are interested.

First up is new client, who I've quite recently started working for, there a building company that specialises in loft conversions.  We've very nearly finished an A5 flyer for them, which I think will go to print this week.  I've already redesigned their logo, which, actually I've just remembered I need to send over to the company that designed their website... I'll add that to my to-do list!  Today and tomorrow, I'm hopefully going to finish off their business stationery and I think after that there might be another job which I think is some kind quote/job folder.

I'm very close, finally to finishing the artwork for the Peake Health Website, this has been ongoing job for quite a long time and hopefully we're very close to putting it to bed.

September is looking like it might be a busy month - I've got projects lined up for a couple of new clients plus a couple of old ones.  We might be busy on the web side of things with possibility of building a couple of new websites as well.  I'll let you know how we get on!

The Dreaded Summer Lull

What a difference a week makes...

I've had a brilliant few days with work, my phone started ringing again and thankfully i'm nice and busy! A week or so ago things were looking a little bleak - I was trying not to worry too much about it because to be honest I went through something very similar last year when work dried up at exactly the same time. I got through that period and went on to be very busy up until Christmas and work has been fairly decent until this little dry patch.

Well now I have work in fact I have lots of it and my schedule for the next couple of weeks is going to be very hectic. I'm working for four new clients, a building company that specialises in Loft Conversions, a new bridal shop thats opening quite close to where i live, a fashion boutique and a local business magazine. I'm doing lots of work for all four of these companies including logos, stationery, signage, flyers, brochures and websites.

On top of that I've also had a bit of good luck in that three of my current clients have also commission more work from me - so I'm going to busy!

I will try and keep you all updated and post some of the new designs as they are finished.

Cheers
